by guest blogger Bonnie Spencer Part 2, Part 3 October 9, 2018 CW and I are both huge Cincinnati Reds fans. One of our favorite Reds is Joe Nuxhall, a famous left-handed pitcher. When the lefty retired as a player in 1967, he immediately joined the Reds radio broadcasting team. For the next 37 years, “Nuxy” was a familiar voice of the Reds, ending his broadcasts with his trademark sign-off: This is the old left-hander, rounding third and heading for home. The last six words are prominently displayed on the outside of the stadium …
September 22, 2018 The big day finally arrived this past summer. I was en route to my high school reunion. My class would be congregating for the 50th time since we accepted our diplomas. This would be my first appearance among them in 25 years. Maybe I need to get out more. The drive of 200 miles gave me plenty of time to review my two pre-arranged strategies for the event. That’s not many, but I just wanted to make sure I did at least a couple things right. It was easier 25 years ago …
by guest blogger Bonnie Spencer Part 1, Part 2 May 15, 2018 Day 11 (Monday): west of Belle Valley to AEP Bicentennial Campground K (6.7 trail miles + 0.4 mile looking for blazes) We’re back at the Best Western in Caldwell for the third and final week of our spring hike. We have a lot of off-road hiking on the week’s agenda, though some details are still fluid. The wintry weather has turned to summer heat. Maybe the lovely spring temperatures made their appearance during the past two weeks while we were home. Oh …
by guest blogger Bonnie Spencer Part 1, Part 3 April 24, 2018 Day 6 (Monday): Belle Valley to northwest of Fulda (9.7 trail miles + 0.1 mile to car) We’re off for another fun week of hiking the Buckeye Trail in southeast Ohio. Since we left a car where we hiked last time, I was able to take a nap on the drive up. When I awoke, we were already in Caldwell where we’re staying this week. It was early, so we grabbed some breakfast at McDonald’s. We still arrived at the motel before …
by guest blogger Bonnie Spencer Part 2, Part 3 April 13, 2018 Before we even started our spring 10-percenter hike on the Buckeye Trail, our schedule changed. We had planned to begin the third week of March, but the 10-day forecast showed rain and snow. CW decided it would be best to move our start to April. As the new 10-day forecast came around, it showed rain and possible snow. Oh well. CW said not to worry. “It’s gonna be fun,” he told me. We will be getting into serious hill country. CW has …
March 10, 2018 The other day a friend asked me how my year was going. I told him I’d had my up and downs but I couldn’t complain. If my brain had been working—and that’s really the topic of this blog—I would have declared instead that I’d had my share of downs and ups. Mostly they occur at home. It goes like this. I go down the stairs to the basement to get something. By the time I hit the bottom step I forget what it is. Then I go back up to the kitchen …
